Why I Stopped Chasing SEO and Started Writing for Joy
SEO doesn’t really matter anymore. After the recent Google updates, it’s best if we write for humans instead of search engines.
In my early days of blogging, every guru preached the same gospel: SEO. They insisted that ignoring it was like driving at night without headlights.
They were right.
I remember mastering technical, on-page, and off-page SEO techniques just to capture my share of search traffic.
And I did. I’d start a blog, and within three months, it would be ranking for some hot keywords. Back then, blogging was tough but profitable.
Now, SEO doesn’t seem to hold the same importance. After numerous Google content updates, even the best-performing blogs have taken a hit. A friend of mine had a blog that was raking in nearly $10,000 per month in ad revenue. After one of those updates, his traffic began to decline — and so did his revenue. He had to sell the blog before losing everything. Another friend completely stopped blogging and switched to mobile app development.
Right now, even if you optimize your blog and content for SEO, there’s no guarantee you’ll get good traffic. I’m not sure if anyone truly knows what to do about it. Honestly, I don’t care.
